Process:

The creation of this building started with drawing a functional relationship diagram of our house and to show how things are connected within our home. Then, we had an opportunity to choose an inspirational building. For me, this building was the Bergeron Center at York University. I researched this building's inspirations and found that York University was big on nature and wanted to show it off. Thus, they combined two complementary ideas of nature: the cloud & rock. Based on that inspiration, I drew my mock designs for the house and sketched a structure in Google Sketch Up which gave me some perspective on what the house should look like. Next, I created floor plans for each level along with elevation plans for the building and lastly, I designed the building using foam core to create a 3D model.

Purpose:

Architecture as a whole is something society takes for granted. When the word architecture reaches our ears, people automatically think of buildings be it high-rise or low rise. Architecture is more than a building, it is limitless, and the purpose of this project was to prove it. Bjarke Ingels perfectly explains the purpose and what architecture is when he states "For me, architecture is the means, not the end. It's a means of making different life forms possible." Architecture, as stated in the quote is not limited to buildings rather it is more of the flow of design that helps us determine everything we do in our day to day lives. Interacting with our neighbors, to the way light is drawn into our homes which consequently affects our mood, or the way we contribute to our carbon footprint is all based on different life forms. Understanding it was the purpose of this assignment. It forced us to take a step back and get rid of the bland definition and see architecture for what it truly is: something that plays a vital role in our day to day life.
Analysis:
When approaching this task, I wanted to follow my inspirational building but I also wanted to add my own voice to it. Thus, I decided to switch a couple of elements my inspirational building used while sticking to the overall elemental theme. I kept the notion cloud but switched out rocks for light and wind. To produce the cloud like feeling, I utilized the Bergeron Center's cloud façade. For light, I created most- if not all- the exterior walls glass, made the building tall, and kept the rest in white since light reflects more when it comes into contact with the color white. The white walls help in creating a space with ample natural light. For the wind like feeling, I swooped one of the roves to show the direction the breeze is guiding the building. As for my analysis, I think I achieved the purpose of this project. I showed that architecture is not just about creating another block; instead, it is about creating a harmonious space where life can thrive. I added the cloud façade to bring in a pop of color and brighten the mood of the residents. I installed glass on the exterior walls and kept the structure in white to allow natural light to flow through the house thereby providing a feeling of lightness to the overall space. I added the swoop in the roof to create a cool and wow factor hoping that the residents would have a mutual feeling thus cheering them on. In short, my project was in line with what architecture truly is: a means of making a difference, and in this case, the difference was in uplifting a person's mood.
