MESSAGE FROM THE ARTIST

MESSAGE FROM THE ARTIST

Dear Readers,

A universal rule of thumb for a portfolio is that it must be cohesive.

My portfolio, however, is far from cohesive.  I set out to introduce the viewer to my life through my various forms of art.
I look at a portfolio as an attempt by the artist to express intellectual and emotional concepts that are generally restricted by the spoken or written word. It is a form of guiding and leading the viewer into the life of the artist.  Since our essence is made up of an array of passions, emotions, and inspirations, then our portfolio must be as well. It cannot fall into the category of “cohesive.”

With this as my guide, I set out to create my own portfolio.

For my value drawings, I wanted to show the beauty of light and its ability to conform to different objects and mediums- something that continues to fascinate me.

As for my oil painting, and hopefully, this was obvious, it is my heart’s desire to attend Harvard. Now that I am a Junior and so close to applying to universities, I can’t help but feel excited that I am within reach of my dream. Thus, I expressed my feelings the only way I knew how: through art.

My contemporary street art was meant to shine a light on the fact that 13.4 million birds die every day. I was astonished by the fact that such beautiful creatures are wiped off the earth due to various reasons when it is in our power to preserve them. Thus, my advocating side took over, and my sculpture was born to show the devastation in the animal kingdom.

Lastly, for my architectural unit, I embraced my inspirational building while holding true to the voice inside of me urging me to "be different."  My building was inspired by the movement of wind, light, and clouds as oppose to my inspirational building's representation of clouds and rocks.

In short, my portfolio followed the definition of what I believe it should be: a representation of the artist and in my case, it was a representation of a nature lover, animal advocate and a unique human being who is Harvard bound.
